About Shoulder Pain
The shoulder has the most range of motion of any joint in the body, which is exactly why it's so vulnerable to pain and stiffness. Whether it's a rotator cuff strain from the gym, a frozen shoulder that crept up over months, or pain that won't let you sleep on that side, Recure's assessment identifies which part of the joint is restricted or weak before building a treatment plan that restores both motion and strength — not just one or the other.

What Causes Shoulder Pain?
The shoulder trades stability for range of motion more than any other joint in the body, which is exactly why it's prone to such a wide variety of problems. A rotator cuff strain from the gym behaves completely differently to a frozen shoulder that crept up gradually over months with no clear trigger, and both are different again from impingement caused by repetitive overhead movement. Telling these apart early matters, because mobilising a frozen shoulder too aggressively, or resting a rotator cuff injury too completely, both slow recovery down rather than speeding it up.
- Rotator cuff strain or tear from overhead activity or a fall
- Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis), often following a period of immobility
- Impingement from repetitive overhead movement
- Poor posture loading the shoulder girdle unevenly
- Shoulder instability from a previous dislocation
- Age-related degeneration of the rotator cuff tendons

Symptoms
Shoulder problems tend to announce themselves through a specific mix of pain, weakness and stiffness, and which one dominates is genuinely diagnostic. Pain reaching overhead or behind the back that's limited by sharp discomfort rather than true stiffness usually points to the rotator cuff; progressive, grinding stiffness that restricts movement even when someone else moves the arm for you is the hallmark of a frozen shoulder. Night pain that disturbs sleep is common to both, which is often what finally brings people in for an assessment.
- Pain reaching overhead, behind the back, or across the body
- Night pain that disturbs sleep, especially lying on the affected side
- Progressive stiffness and loss of movement
- Weakness lifting or carrying objects
- A catching or grinding sensation with movement
- Pain that spreads down the upper arm

How We Treat It
Shoulder treatment has to rebuild motion and strength together — focusing on only one usually means the problem resurfaces once you're back to normal activity. Manual therapy and a graded stretching programme address the stiffness, while rotator cuff and scapular strengthening rebuilds the control that protects the joint going forward. For frozen shoulder specifically, we work with the condition's natural timeline rather than against it, and for anyone training or playing sport, we build overhead work back in progressively rather than all at once.
- Manual therapy and joint mobilisation
- Rotator cuff and scapular strengthening
- Graded stretching programme for frozen shoulder
- Postural correction for the shoulder girdle
- Activity and technique modification for overhead sports or gym work
- Guided return-to-overhead-activity programme
