About Neck Pain
Neck pain has become an occupational hazard of screen-heavy work — hours spent looking down at a phone or leaning into a laptop add up. At Recure, we assess how your neck moves, how your shoulders and upper back are compensating, and whether any pain is travelling down your arm before building a treatment plan. The goal isn't just to loosen a stiff neck for a day; it's to fix the postural and strength deficits causing the stiffness to come back.

What Causes Neck Pain?
Neck pain has become something of an occupational hazard — the posture most screen-based jobs put us in for 8-plus hours a day places far more load on the neck than most people realise. But desk posture is only part of the picture: a poorly supported pillow, an old whiplash injury, or simply the wear that comes with age can all produce a very similar ache. Because the treatment differs depending on the cause, we spend real time in your assessment working out exactly which of these is behind your particular pain.
- Prolonged screen time and forward-head posture ("tech neck")
- Poor pillow support or an awkward sleeping position
- Whiplash from a road traffic accident
- Age-related wear in the cervical spine (cervical spondylosis)
- Stress-related tightening of the neck and shoulder muscles
- A nerve being irritated or compressed in the neck (cervical radiculopathy)

Symptoms
Neck pain shows up in a few distinct ways, and the pattern tells us a lot before we've even started treatment. Some people get a localised stiffness that limits how far they can turn their head; others get headaches that start at the base of the skull, which is a different problem to a migraine and is treated differently. When pain, tingling or weakness travels down into the arm or hand, that's a sign a nerve in the neck is involved, and it changes what we check for in your assessment.
- Stiffness or reduced range of motion turning the head
- A dull ache at the base of the skull or across the shoulders
- Sharp pain radiating into the arm or hand
- Headaches that start at the neck (cervicogenic headache)
- Pins-and-needles or weakness in the hand
- Muscle spasm after long hours at a desk

How We Treat It
Loosening a stiff neck for a day is the easy part — stopping it from tightening up again a week later is the actual goal. Manual therapy and joint mobilisation bring the immediate relief, but it's paired from early on with deep neck flexor strengthening and a proper look at your workstation, because posture-related neck pain that isn't addressed at the source simply returns. Where symptoms are travelling into the arm, we add nerve-gliding work specifically for that.
- Manual therapy and joint mobilisation of the cervical spine
- Deep neck flexor and postural strengthening
- Ergonomic and workstation assessment
- Nerve-gliding exercises for arm symptoms
- Trigger point release for muscle spasm
- Stretching and mobility programme for home
